I was interviewed today by a charming young woman who asked me what head space I had to be in to write poetry. That led to this . . .<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The steam shovel<br \/>\nin the glass case<br \/>\nat the midway<br \/>\nis designed<br \/>\nto tempt<br \/>\nto promise<br \/>\nbut not to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>One day Tiger<!--more--><br \/>\nwill shoot<br \/>\na record breaking sixty-two<br \/>\nand the next day<br \/>\nlittle better than par.<\/p>\n<p>The poet hangs<br \/>\nby a pen point<br \/>\na light year above<br \/>\nthe crystalline moment<br \/>\nand knows no fear<br \/>\nbut that he will fall<br \/>\nelsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The kid on the shovel<br \/>\nand the Tiger<br \/>\nand the poet<br \/>\nall know<br \/>\nthe prize can be<br \/>\nimpossible<br \/>\nprobable<br \/>\nor inescapable.<\/p>\n<p>To write,<br \/>\nI have to place myself<br \/>\non the edge<br \/>\nof vertigo<br \/>\nhanging over<br \/>\nthat memory<br \/>\nstruck in the crystal moment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the poet muses about the process.
