{"id":202,"date":"2006-06-25T06:34:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-25T10:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/06\/25\/spiral\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T09:54:58","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T14:54:58","slug":"spiral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/06\/25\/spiral\/","title":{"rendered":"spiral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t remember<br \/>\nthat it used to be so hard<br \/>\nto cut this lawn<\/p>\n<p>I can remember cutting all around<br \/>\nthe place in a morning<br \/>\nand that was before mowers were<br \/>\nas light and the blade was all hacked<br \/>\nand chewed \u2014 but it was easier<\/p>\n<p>The slope was less then, too<br \/>\nI&#8217;m sure and the sun<br \/>\nthe sun was certainly not this hot<br \/>\nsure it&#8217;s global warming<br \/>\nplanet&#8217;s going to hell the hard way<br \/>\nI recall swinging around this tree<br \/>\nlike it was a race<br \/>\nsmelling the fresh-cut turf was a pleasure<br \/>\nkind of a rich sweet warmth<br \/>\nburgeoned by the sun<\/p>\n<p>Now here I am sitting like a time out<br \/>\nin the shade on this poor old table<br \/>\nlike an old stud panting after<br \/>\njust looking over the pasture<br \/>\nfrom the barn door<\/p>\n<p>Wife offers me a glass of water<br \/>\ntime was it would be a cool beer<br \/>\nnot now<br \/>\nnow I have to watch the calories<br \/>\ncalories is something I could use<br \/>\nright about now<\/p>\n<p>Right about now<br \/>\nI could use a few sips of suds<\/p>\n<p>I recall a day<br \/>\nheck it was over thirty years ago<br \/>\nstepped into a little pub<br \/>\nin Niagara On The Lake<br \/>\nhot day<br \/>\nI was waiting while the<br \/>\nteachers in the course I was running<br \/>\nattended a play<br \/>\nhad to give my ticket<br \/>\nto a foolish woman<br \/>\nchanged her mind<br \/>\nat the last moment<br \/>\ndraft beer was fifteen cents<br \/>\nthose little tapered glasses<br \/>\nthey used in the men&#8217;s rooms<br \/>\nbarren affairs<br \/>\nlittle round tables<br \/>\nfor hard drinking<br \/>\nI ordered one, downed it<br \/>\nthen another and another<br \/>\nsoon some amazed gent<br \/>\nbought me a tray full<br \/>\nsaid he&#8217;d never seen such a thirst<br \/>\nwent down like air into lungs<br \/>\nafter a while<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t miss that play in the least<br \/>\nbody absorbed a tableful in a couple of hours<\/p>\n<p>Couldn&#8217;t do that today<br \/>\nnot even those little<br \/>\nfifteen cent glasses<\/p>\n<p>be lying under this table<\/p>\n<p>Yet each time I cut this grass<br \/>\nI seem to return<br \/>\nto the same place in time<br \/>\njust feeling it differently<br \/>\nsometimes its harder<br \/>\nsometimes its sweeter<br \/>\nsometimes I can<br \/>\nhear those voices weaving through<br \/>\nthe roar of the motor<br \/>\nHey daddy roar supper time roar<br \/>\nI see a little puppy near the edge of vision<br \/>\nburied under this very grass now<br \/>\nI see the faces just at the side<br \/>\nin the taller grass<br \/>\nall gone<br \/>\nI feel like a jog over to the sunrise<br \/>\nbut it&#8217;s late afternoon<br \/>\nI want to hear the little voices playing Barbie<br \/>\nor truck war or a screen door slam<br \/>\nand sandy feet running to the bathroom<br \/>\nbut they all have things to do<br \/>\nthings about their cycles of work<br \/>\nand planting and cutting<br \/>\nand making<\/p>\n<p>I get tired sometimes<br \/>\nlet the grass go<br \/>\nit can wait for tomorrow<\/p>\n<p>I reach for the water<br \/>\nand take a sip<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t remember that it used to be so hard to cut this lawn I can remember cutting all around the place in a morning and that was before mowers were as light and the blade was all hacked and &hellip;
