The sun set just before we turned west onto the road
\nthat curved into the pure black landscape silhouetted
\nagainst the absolutely clear tangerine and indigo sky.<\/p>\n
As our headlights revealed and dismissed the familiar
\nmeanderings of this riverside route and its clusters of cottages
\nthe sky disappeared, leaving us to spelunk our way<\/p>\n
against the temporal shift, the montage of trips past
\nthe newlyweds, the car full of little kids and toys,
\nthe silent obstinate teenagers, the tearful adults departing.<\/p>\n
We are silent, nothing needs saying. I think we’re both smiling.
