{"id":1939,"date":"2009-09-05T08:46:50","date_gmt":"2009-09-05T12:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=1939"},"modified":"2009-10-12T18:23:53","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T22:23:53","slug":"what-was-left","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/09\/05\/what-was-left\/","title":{"rendered":"what was left"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First they took away the all money<br \/>\npoured it into the government trough<br \/>\nand they fed the war in Afganistan<br \/>\nbut still that wasn&#8217;t enough<\/p>\n<p>so they crucified the artists<br \/>\nand they stood around and laughed<br \/>\nand they fed their blood to the Taliban<br \/>\nto fatten up the golden calf<\/p>\n<p>Let them work for a living<!--more--><br \/>\nthey yelled as they played itunes<br \/>\nand the sand crept into the alphabet<br \/>\nand they howled at the rising moon<\/p>\n<p>Next they canceled the arts in all the schools<br \/>\nand art disappeared from the malls<br \/>\nno theatre, sculpture, films, no books<br \/>\nand nothing on the boardroom walls<\/p>\n<p>They imported a bit from China<br \/>\nlike they brought in everything else<br \/>\nand the only dance was done without pants<br \/>\nin bars on the edge of Hell<\/p>\n<p>Let them work for a living<br \/>\nthey yelled as they played itunes<br \/>\nand the sand crept into the alphabet<br \/>\nas they howled at the rising moon<\/p>\n<p>The rehearsal halls were empty<br \/>\nthe theatres silent too<br \/>\nno dancers sweated all day for a chance<br \/>\nto sweat all evening too<\/p>\n<p>The blues musicians were sent to camps<br \/>\nand so were the writers and their pencils<br \/>\nsoon the only words were spoken by birds<br \/>\nor sprayed on walls through stencils<\/p>\n<p>Let them work for a living<br \/>\nthey yelled as they played itunes<br \/>\nand the sand crept into the alphabet<br \/>\nand they howled at the rising moon<\/p>\n<p>Then the kids rebelled &#8217;cause the schools were Hell<br \/>\nwithout some art and music<br \/>\nbut some expert said they should eat brown bread<br \/>\nand adamantly refused it<\/p>\n<p>and day by day the world grew gray<br \/>\nand the streets grew still too soon<br \/>\nand the sand crept into the alphabet<br \/>\nas they howled at the rising moon<\/p>\n<p>So now we work for a living<br \/>\nand we&#8217;re grimmer and deader and soon<br \/>\nall that sand will swallow the alphabet<br \/>\nas we howl at the rising moon<\/p>\n<p>and the sand will swallow the alphabet<br \/>\nas we howl at the rising moon<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The poem takes on the growing political will to abandon the arts.
