{"id":1815,"date":"2009-06-04T06:47:01","date_gmt":"2009-06-04T10:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=1815"},"modified":"2009-06-04T12:15:43","modified_gmt":"2009-06-04T16:15:43","slug":"smoldering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2009\/06\/04\/smoldering\/","title":{"rendered":"smoldering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some things a teacher can<br \/>\nthat others can&#8217;t:<br \/>\nfocus every eye in the room<br \/>\nignite a brain<br \/>\nfire an imagination<\/p>\n<p>and like a judicious parent<br \/>\ninstill the everlasting thirst.<\/p>\n<p>Yet over all those years<br \/>\nthe tidal surges of<br \/>\nadamantine mothers and fathers who defended<br \/>\nthe perpetual inertia of their failing offspring,<br \/>\nignorant politicians with corrosive &#8220;improvements&#8221;<br \/>\nwho believed hype was wisdom,<br \/>\nconflicted colleagues who leaked angst that<br \/>\ndrowned any spark or smoldering ember\u2014<br \/>\nthese caustications corroded all joy<br \/>\nlayered a hard patina of\u00a0 rust<br \/>\nleft him silent, still, an empty tin man<br \/>\nwho lit no fires<br \/>\nsaw no stars<br \/>\ndreamed in another dark desert<\/p>\n<p>Then, after years<br \/>\nhad distanced and<br \/>\nmemory cooled,<br \/>\na refreshing invitation<br \/>\nto penetrate young eyes<br \/>\nand draw them in:<br \/>\nNow not the parent<br \/>\nbut the grampa,<br \/>\nhe gleefully lit the rockets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote this poem after a call by teachers who were concerned that the student cast of the spring musical were not going to be ready for opening night. I suggested they call in a formidable stranger to shake up the cast. They asked me to do it. I watched an hour and a half of rehearsal, then addressed the cast.
