{"id":17,"date":"2006-03-09T23:40:25","date_gmt":"2006-03-10T04:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=17"},"modified":"2006-03-09T23:40:25","modified_gmt":"2006-03-10T04:40:25","slug":"philology-iv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/03\/09\/philology-iv\/","title":{"rendered":"Philology IV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hotdog.<\/p>\n<p>We pull to a stop in front<br \/>\nOf their woodframe house<br \/>\nSet back from the sleepy<br \/>\nOak and maple treed street<br \/>\nIn downstate New York,<br \/>\nA stone&#8217;s throw<br \/>\nFrom the Hudson River.<\/p>\n<p>My wife&#8217;s cousins<br \/>\nWho grew up in the Bronx<br \/>\nAnd are populating these old dutch hills<br \/>\nWith growing broods of Irish Armericans,<br \/>\nSpeak English in their own heads<br \/>\nThe way it is written<br \/>\nAs do I.<a><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am Canajun, eh?<br \/>\nAnd I live<br \/>\nNorth of New York State,<br \/>\nNorth of the St. Lawrence River.<br \/>\nI say hawkee; they say hackee:<br \/>\nMy mouth is vertical; theirs horizontal.<\/p>\n<p>On the eight hour trip to visit,<br \/>\nIt amuses me to try to pronounce &#8220;hotdog&#8221;<br \/>\nRipping the vowels apart to my ear<br \/>\nMuch as, to my ear, they do.<br \/>\nMy wife sighs beside me.<br \/>\nAs I listen to them in my head,<br \/>\nI hear them put a gutteral<br \/>\n&#8220;A&#8221; in front of the first &#8220;o&#8221;<br \/>\n(Which they then distort<br \/>\nTo make it part of the gutteral &#8220;a&#8221;),<br \/>\nThen they put a &#8220;w&#8221; in front of<br \/>\nThe second &#8220;o&#8221; as: &#8220;haahtdwog&#8221;.<br \/>\nBy the same token, I am sure it<br \/>\nAmuses them to try to verticalize<br \/>\nTheir lips and try to pronounce<br \/>\nMy word: &#8220;hahtdahg&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a shop near my home that<br \/>\nCalls them by another name: steamers.<br \/>\nI see the sign: &#8220;<i>Steamers 60\u00a2<\/i> &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hi, says my wife&#8217;s Irish cousin,<br \/>\nGiving me a hug Good to see you.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s been too long. Come on in.<\/p>\n<p>Not a word about hotdogs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hotdog.
