\nclematis is delicate but inquisitive
\nher runners go everywhere and
\nshe likes her feet shaded
\nso she said and she should know
\nhaving shaded many a clematis’ foot<\/p>\n
I regard the wispy clematis in her pot
\nwondering if she was getting ready to run
\nshe looked kind of uncombed and flaky
\nlike a frowsy just-woke-up sleepy teenager
\nwe had selected (nay we chose you and that
\nmeans we love you more than other babies
\nwho just appear) dear heart we chose you
\nfrom several tables of lovely slender tendrils
\nand delicate large blossoms all hoping to be
\nbrought out of the plant nursery and into life
\npick me oh pick me I felt sorry for the eager
\noh so eager little sprouts we could not pick
\nI hoped they would find good caring homes
\nand a shady place for their delicate little feet<\/p>\n
We brought you home rustling excitedly with
\na black wrought iron trellis to place behind the
\nlovely future star were were going to plant
\nin soft loam by the potting shed<\/p>\n
I dug into the earth with a large round-mouth spade
\nto lay in the groundwork for your bed:
\npoured bonemeal, sheep manure compost
\nand peatmoss into the sifted loam in the wheelbarrow
\nmixed by heaping and shoving it with gloved hands
\nuntil I had water in the hole and eased your delicate root ball
\nout of the pot, packed in the soil, stood up the trellis
\ntransplanted some ubiquitous ivy in front of your dainty feet
\nand went in for supper.<\/p>\n
This morning you were still snug in your bed
\nI like the idea that if I keep you healthy and happy
