{"id":151,"date":"2006-05-15T20:42:29","date_gmt":"2006-05-16T00:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/05\/15\/in-the-mi-%e2%80%94\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T10:03:34","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T15:03:34","slug":"in-the-mi-%e2%80%94","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/05\/15\/in-the-mi-%e2%80%94\/","title":{"rendered":". . . in the mi \u2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014 ddle of the red hot words<br \/>\nthat flared between us that<br \/>\nwarm Indian summer afternoon<br \/>\nhaunted by the oh-so-thin parchment of<br \/>\nmy mother softly twisting deep<br \/>\nin the pyramid close by father&#8217;s sarcophagus<\/p>\n<p>I remember the heat and the<br \/>\nthought that had invaded me:<br \/>\nunlike spring<br \/>\nall blues and greens and coming to life \u2014<br \/>\nnot the pastel hues of the<br \/>\nsterile scrubbed halls<br \/>\ndownwhich caught in a dry raspy<br \/>\nshallow railing twisted knot<br \/>\nI could hardly bring myself to visit<br \/>\nmy mother was in freefall \u2014<br \/>\nfall is ochres and wine reds<br \/>\nand departures and death<\/p>\n<p>This seemed to be death<br \/>\ndeath of romance<br \/>\na death replete with kids<br \/>\nand arguments over money<br \/>\nand war and peace and toothpaste<br \/>\nand nickles and dimes and a<br \/>\nchipped tooth and socks<br \/>\npiled in dusty corners<br \/>\nthat were suddenly my turn<br \/>\nto vacuum and grow up over<br \/>\nand the words were pinching like<br \/>\ndeath in a sock: a blister that<br \/>\nwas beginning to fester<br \/>\nright in the mi \u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ddle of that right there<br \/>\njust at that precise instant<br \/>\nwhile bruised berries were fermenting<br \/>\non the soft bed of just slowing<br \/>\nblown strumpet flowers and squirrels<br \/>\nwere panicking and fretting on thin twigs<br \/>\nlecturing each other on the louring skies<br \/>\nand watching in paranoid pixillated<br \/>\nstop-action<br \/>\neverything over their shoulders<br \/>\nand birds were rehearsing<br \/>\nthe long flights to come<br \/>\ngeese serious in high formation<br \/>\nravens congregating in swirling<br \/>\nshredded pointilistic clouds<br \/>\nhigh above the highest trees<\/p>\n<p>right there in that moment<br \/>\njust between you<br \/>\nand &#8220;you&#8221;<br \/>\nand a threat<br \/>\nof tears \u2014<\/p>\n<p>A colossal crash<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 stopped the words<br \/>\nstopped my heart \u2014<\/p>\n<p>I rushed outside<br \/>\nyou followed<br \/>\nclutching your apron<\/p>\n<p>I was gnawing on adrenaline<br \/>\nthat lept me all five steps<br \/>\nonto the front walk<\/p>\n<p>What is it?<\/p>\n<p>We looked at the window<br \/>\nThere imprinted dead centre<br \/>\nin the middle of the tickytacky picture window<br \/>\nwas the dust haloed outline of a large bird<br \/>\nwings outspread like a paraclete<br \/>\nneck turned aside<\/p>\n<p>holocaust<\/p>\n<p>Dead in the bushes below<br \/>\na pheasant<\/p>\n<p>drunk on berries<br \/>\nthey do that<\/p>\n<p>Inside the house the phone was ringing<\/p>\n<p>We looked at each other<br \/>\nthe sunlight caught your frazzled hair<br \/>\njust golden in the moment<br \/>\nSomething flooded into the day<br \/>\nthat had not been allowed before<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014 ddle of the red hot words that flared between us that warm Indian summer afternoon haunted by the oh-so-thin parchment of my mother softly twisting deep in the pyramid close by father&#8217;s sarcophagus I remember the heat and the &hellip;
