{"id":148,"date":"2006-05-13T23:18:03","date_gmt":"2006-05-14T03:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/05\/13\/the-notatoy\/"},"modified":"2006-05-14T23:14:38","modified_gmt":"2006-05-15T03:14:38","slug":"the-notatoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/05\/13\/the-notatoy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Notatoy"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>It is a given that any child worth his salt<br \/>\nWill test the boundaries any adult imposes<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t fair:<br \/>\nI wasn&#8217;t an adult;<br \/>\nThe kid wasn&#8217;t mine:<br \/>\nI was the babysitter<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He sat fidgeting<br \/>\nAt the kitchen table<br \/>\nWhile his mother<br \/>\nOutlined the rules<\/p>\n<p>Teddy was to be in bed<br \/>\nBy eight o&#8217;clock sharp<br \/>\nThere would be no TV<br \/>\nUntil he tidied his room<\/p>\n<p>I was welcome to milk<br \/>\nFrom the fridge and<br \/>\n(Here she whispered)<br \/>\nCookies from the jar<\/p>\n<p>Teddy heard everything<br \/>\nand was sizing me up<br \/>\nwithout looking at me<br \/>\nAll he needed was my pulse<\/p>\n<p>As the door clicked<br \/>\nHe began his metamorphosis<br \/>\nInto a giant squid<br \/>\nBy spilling my ink<\/p>\n<p>All over my homework<br \/>\nThat was the nicest<br \/>\nthing he did all evening<br \/>\nUntil I found him<\/p>\n<p>playing with the large<br \/>\nbutcher knife under<br \/>\nhis bed I said firmly<br \/>\nThat is not a toy<\/p>\n<p>He looked up and said<br \/>\nI have heard that<br \/>\nbefore. Who makes<br \/>\nthese notatoys?<\/p>\n<p>Give it to me I said<br \/>\nand I&#8217;ll tell you.
