{"id":1327,"date":"2008-12-16T08:26:32","date_gmt":"2008-12-16T12:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=1327"},"modified":"2008-12-16T08:26:32","modified_gmt":"2008-12-16T12:26:32","slug":"indelible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2008\/12\/16\/indelible\/","title":{"rendered":"indelible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the tall Roman aquaduct that survives in the heart<br \/>\nof Firenze, windows and doors peer casually like eyes<br \/>\nfrom within the sockets of a polished ancient skull<br \/>\nat the tourists spending euros and pointing cameras.<\/p>\n<p>All manner of soft hulled and armoured descendents<br \/>\nscuttle through the narrow corridors of this hive,<br \/>\ncooking, nesting, humming, as they did millennia past<br \/>\nin the red brick and marble Roman markets and houses<br \/>\nfed precious water through channels from the duct above.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras tell these images to albums back in our houses<br \/>\nstrung like plastic beads on the sprawling web of streets<br \/>\nwe call <em>suburbia<\/em>, unconsciously animating<br \/>\nthe ancient tongues that spoke so long ago.<\/p>\n<p>And so we prepare to live their lives:<br \/>\narm armies, mourn loss, re-pile bricks and listen for<br \/>\nthe cadence of Roman legions&#8217; sandals<br \/>\nthe beat of the legions&#8217; drums<br \/>\nthe flow of legions&#8217; blood.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the tall Roman aquaduct that survives in the heart of Firenze, windows and doors peer casually like eyes from within the sockets of a polished ancient skull at the tourists spending euros and pointing cameras.
