The girl I was sitting under<br \/>\nin the back seat was telling us that olives<br \/>\nare an aquired taste: either you like them<br \/>\nor you don&#8217;t, and I, never having pondered<br \/>\nso weighty an issue (this was my Petersen<br \/>\npipe-smoking period, and I was puffing<br \/>\nand relighting very aromatic rum-soaked tobacco)<br \/>\nrealized I could come down on either side<br \/>\nand made a decision I have never regretted:<\/p>\n<p>I really like olives<\/p>\n<p>Now, at night, when I need something<br \/>\nto take the edge off, I slide a teaspoon<br \/>\ninto the tub of stuffed queen olives<br \/>\nadrift in their flavoured olive oil<br \/>\nand soon am munching on one-two-three-four<br \/>\nluscious salty juicy greeny pimento olives<br \/>\nwhich have for me all the delicious<br \/>\nsatisfaction that attends to eating<br \/>\nripe brie and marmalade<br \/>\nor sausages and saurkraut<br \/>\nwithout any of the guilt.<\/p>\n<p>olives don&#8217;t just satisfy hunger<br \/>\nthey satisfy travel and exploration<br \/>\nyearnings as well: they take me<br \/>\nback in my imagination to Tuscany<br \/>\nto the little store that sold<br \/>\nopalescent olive oil and wine<br \/>\nmade in their own vinyards<br \/>\nand I can remember walking along the<br \/>\nmountainside road near the villa<br \/>\nwe were renting near Castellina in Chianti<br \/>\nI remember the yellowish gravel,<br \/>\nthe little sign we often saw outside each farm<br \/>\n&#8220;Vin Sante&#8221; and that was the drink<br \/>\nfor Sundays with hard little biscotta<br \/>\nof course there were the elegant cyprus trees<br \/>\nso typical of Italy and the rows of vines<br \/>\nand olive trees and a kind of millennial peace<br \/>\nthat just hung over the place as it seems to<br \/>\nover any farming countryside.<\/p>\n<p>Some early life decisions are good<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There were seven of us stuffed into a Volkswagen, the old kind because this was the fifties, and we were college students.
