In Glengarry, at Maxville
\non the August holiday weekend
\nis held the Annual Glengarry Highland Games
\nwhich swells this little village from
\nabout eight hundred to twenty-five thousand
\nthe largest highland games in the world<\/p>\n
I love the perpetual sound of piping, drumming
\nthat pervades the fairgrounds all weekend
\nand I can sit for hours and listen
\nto the Piobaireachd classical pipe music
\nwhich takes you to the Scottish countryside
\nand the scottish drummers who practise that
\nmost complex of drumming and who by and large
\nknow more about jazzy rhythms than
\nbar musicians do and of course,
\nthere is the sound of the pipes everywhere
\nand most of all, the massed bands
\nwhich bring tremors into the earth
\nand teach you how Roman drums and horns
\ncould have terrified their cowering wretched
\noponents \u2014 with all that going for it
\nI look forward to lining up under the hot August sun
\nat a small stand which is there every year
\nwhere from great blocks they use wires to slice little slabs of<\/p>\n

\nit demands facial muscles
\nyou can wrap your tongue around it
