{"id":1241,"date":"2008-11-24T00:13:25","date_gmt":"2008-11-24T04:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/?p=1241"},"modified":"2008-11-24T08:23:40","modified_gmt":"2008-11-24T12:23:40","slug":"first-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2008\/11\/24\/first-night\/","title":{"rendered":"First Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bari&#8217;s laryngitis for his first time on the stage<br \/>\nbuilt a backstage tension no lozenge could assuage.<br \/>\nThe bass was getting nervous: he had a tricky part;<br \/>\nin &#8220;Sh Boom&#8221; he sings a counterpoint\u2014the timing is an art.<\/p>\n<p>The lead was clearly nervous: he projected pale faced calm;<br \/>\nhe&#8217;d written jokes with the tenor, and hoped they wouldn&#8217;t bomb.<br \/>\nthe tenor was realistic: he knew from his great experience<br \/>\nthat smiles and energy overcome the audience&#8217; hearience.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think then happened, with the nerves and the throat and the jokes?<br \/>\nThey stood and sang and they minted gold with the song and the tag and the post.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>The four parts of a barbershop quartet:<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>Tenor<\/strong>: the high part, usually sung in falsetto<br \/>\n<strong>Lead<\/strong>: the melody part<br \/>\n<strong>Bari<\/strong>: the baritone, the harmony part, ranging from above the lead to the bass range<br \/>\n<strong>Bass<\/strong>: the lowest part, the foundation for the quartet&#8217;s sound<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<strong>Tag<\/strong>: the flourish of sustained chords at the end of most barbershop tunes (Barbershoppers often learn tags by themselves because they are so much fun to sing.)<br \/>\n<strong>Post<\/strong>:\u00a0 a long note, ususally sung by the lead or tenor, that resolves, gloriously, at the end of\u00a0 the tag.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bari&#8217;s laryngitis for his first time on the stage built a backstage tension no lozenge could assuage.
