{"id":118,"date":"2006-04-21T20:27:33","date_gmt":"2006-04-22T00:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/04\/21\/street-screed\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T10:08:48","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T15:08:48","slug":"street-screed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riverwriter.ca\/wordcurrents\/2006\/04\/21\/street-screed\/","title":{"rendered":"Street screed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The kid was littering<br \/>\none of a half-dozen<br \/>\nwalking along at the tail end<br \/>\nhe flipped a cardboard crown<br \/>\nup onto a branch overhanging<br \/>\nthe sidewalk \u2014 Just happens<br \/>\nthe property owner is pulling up<br \/>\nin his car and sees this<\/p>\n<p>Tired of picking up litter<br \/>\ndropped, blown in, and dog poop<br \/>\nhe opens his car door<br \/>\nbellows at the kid<\/p>\n<p>Pick that up!<\/p>\n<p>Well, the kid, a bit embarrassed<br \/>\ngoes back alertly and does that<br \/>\nand well:<br \/>\none of the kids isn&#8217;t quite a kid<br \/>\nshe yells at the guy as he backs into<br \/>\nhis driveway<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s no fuckin&#8217; way to talk to a kid<br \/>\nyou should give a better fuckin&#8217; example<br \/>\nhow old are you<\/p>\n<p>So the guy sez<br \/>\nwhat are you?<br \/>\nand she sez<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m twenty and<br \/>\nI&#8217;m looking after him<br \/>\nand the guy sez<\/p>\n<p>So you should have<br \/>\nstopped him<br \/>\nand she sez<br \/>\nI didn&#8217;t fuckin&#8217; see him<br \/>\nyou should give<br \/>\na better fuckin&#8217; example<br \/>\nand he sez<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s your job<br \/>\nand she sez<\/p>\n<p>If it was fuckin&#8217; up to me<br \/>\nI&#8217;d have fuckin&#8217; left it<br \/>\nHe continues<br \/>\nparking his car<br \/>\nwhile she continues yelling<br \/>\nbut he can&#8217;t hear.<\/p>\n<p>What anger drove her<br \/>\nto confront a guy<br \/>\ntrying to control litter?<\/p>\n<p>She was classy looking<br \/>\nwearing shades and<br \/>\ngood-looking well-fitting<br \/>\njeans and such<\/p>\n<p>Whose side am I on?<br \/>\nmainly on the guy&#8217;s<br \/>\nI can see his frustration<br \/>\nalthough it was more<br \/>\na prank than carelessness<br \/>\nthe kid really didn&#8217;t fit<br \/>\nthe profile of criminality in<br \/>\na discarded cigarette pack<br \/>\na trampled hot drink cup<br \/>\na smashed beer bottle<br \/>\ngrafitti used paper products<br \/>\nplastic wrap styrofoam<br \/>\nold newspapers used pop cans<br \/>\nanimal parts tampons rubbers<br \/>\nthermometers computer parts<br \/>\nirradiated meat tenderized<br \/>\nvegetables soy substitutes<br \/>\ntaxi tires used snot ashes<br \/>\nspare body fat cancelled stamps<br \/>\nand chrome hood ornaments<\/p>\n<p>So what got her started<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it was<br \/>\nthe moment her context<br \/>\nthat had nothing to do with<br \/>\nthe tree littering<br \/>\nmale commands confrontation<br \/>\nmaybe it had more to do with<br \/>\nthe kids she was with<br \/>\nlooking after brooding<br \/>\nher classy exterior<br \/>\nand the sad little insecurities<br \/>\nlurking inside or just<br \/>\na perpetual conviction<br \/>\nthat everything was<br \/>\nsomebody else&#8217;s fault<br \/>\nBut for a second or two<br \/>\nit may not have been logical or<br \/>\npoetic or victorious<br \/>\nbut she was participating<br \/>\nyes she was that<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The kid was littering one of a half-dozen walking along at the tail end he flipped a cardboard crown up onto a branch overhanging the sidewalk \u2014 Just happens the property owner is pulling up in his car and sees &hellip;
