Having lived in a little kingdom
\nof one kind or another forever
\nI am always intrigued to see
\nevidence of a little k.
\nin public
\nyou know
\nthe frantic parent
\nswats or doesn’t swat
\ncusses at or doesn’t
\nthe frantic screaming kid
\nthe wife and kids cluster separately
\nand behind the emperor of himself
\nthe old couple walks
\nhand in hand
\nthe dog barks forever
\nin the car
\nin the yard
\nin the wild
\nthe grim-lipped matron
\nperuses her shopping list
\nthe kid cries silently
\nin the back yard
\nthe little girl hugs her mommy
\ngrinning like mad
\nthe obese redneck
\nloads chips and pop and cheeze wiz
\nand hotdogs and loaves of white bread
\nonto the checkout counter
\nthe slender vegetarian
\nchants a mantra at the bus stop
\nthe wool swathed girl sits
\ncomfortably akimbo sketches in black ink
\non the leatherbound cream hard paper
\nof her comfortable journal
\nthe bag lady
\nswears under her breath
\nat the teenager whose bike
\ncareens past her too close
\nthe guy drives grim-faced
\nwhile his wife glares out her window
\nat the dog pissing on the lampost
\ntwo young cig-toting women waddle
\ndown the street surrounded by kids
\nwho should be in school
\na couple in grubby sweatpants
\nchain smoke all the way down the street
\na guy in a shiny chrome sweetened pickup
\ndrops his skinny wife and kids off
\nin the slush in front of Walmart
\nin threadbare fleece pjs
\na clean shaven guy in a suit
\nwith a sample case and twitching eyes
\nsits drinking coffee in a mall restaurent
\nbefore he goes to the house
\nwith a gun and shoots everyone including
\na clergyman smiles at you professionally
\nand suddenly we are all looking at
\nyour kingdom reading your mind
\nknowing your rules for everyone
