I was holding the door for
\na grey-haired matron
\nwho glanced up at me
\nas she passed.<\/p>\n

She did a double-take
\nand I saw the look
\nan ex-student gives:
\nthe lights go on.<\/p>\n

Now we were caught
\nteetering in the moment:
\nI don’t remember names;
\nnor did she I gather.<\/p>\n

How are you?
\nStill teaching?<\/em><\/p>\n

Still studying?
\nI should ask
\n\u2014or not.<\/p>\n

As I let go of the door and
\nengaged in the predictable
\nbanter about life
\nin the intervening years<\/p>\n

I read the subtext:
\nwe are both climbing
\nthe same ladder;
\nbut once, I\u00a0 gave her\u00a0 a boost.<\/p>\n
