There are goofy, sort of crooked smiles
\nThat plant themselves on faces
\nBefore and after kissing<\/p>\n
What’s so funny? she says
\nAnd he says I’m just happy
\nI smile when I’m happy<\/p>\n
And she, not used to happiness
\nSmiles back but hurts her face
\nWith the unaccustomed exertion<\/p>\n
Her lips peel back from her teeth
\nMuch the way a croocodile
\ncontemplates meat.<\/p>\n
But this is a feast she is part of
\nThe condiments are sweat and lipstick
\nThe cutlery is fingernails and cotton<\/p>\n
Her second smile does not hurt so much
\nShe is becoming used to smiling
\nWhen next he smiles she doesn’t ask<\/p>\n
She just gets ready to eat.
