gold on water

Driving along the old canal
toward the just set sun is
sweet as glaze on a festive cake.
The play we are heading for
is forgotten in that moment
as our eyes are lured
to the fiery crucible that glows
with an invitation to exist here
transfixed by the nails of beauty.
