Totem

I have been each of these heads.
And now am all.
I live complete
atop this aged crazed fir;
in pride of place;
below: fox, rabbit,
cougar, crow,
beaver, wolf, mouse,
marten, mink, muskrat,
jay, gull, swallow,
salmon, sturgeon, whale.
I have ruled
and served.
I observe the sun and stars,
howl silent at the moon.
My knotted roots grip this planet
secure as iron
forged in Earth’s hard heart.
Do not ask who carved me;
I carved myself.
