nonchalant

I was too busy driving
to be paying attention

girl in a bikini
on a cool spring day
riding a bike
down the main street
smiling with a young guy
riding casually beside her

Wife said
“Did you see that?”

“What?”
I said

“The girl in the bikini”

“Where?”

“Right there
riding a bike
with that boy”

Not wanting to
run off the road
I just took a glance
in my rear view

Wife said
“I thought
you’d seen her.
What’s wrong
with you?”

What’s wrong indeed
from what I could see
after the fact
she was young
blonde
pretty
shapely

Thinking about
it
about her
I wondered
what was going on
in her head
on such a cool day

why such ammunition?
if you saw it in a movie
you’d say
“Come on!”

Yet there she was
on the main street
plenty of traffic
in our small city

And here I am
an old guy
who almost missed it
writing a poem about it
