on the night

we took our diversions
to the party
entertained each other
between courses of food
conversation and concern
we caught hints of each other
clues usually covered
by normalcy
but on this night
displayed like fireworks
against the foil of
graceful walls and furnishings
and here was history
and charm and truth
and peace
against the howling
off in the dark
