During an earthquake
in this part of North America
which has the same prevalence
of quakes as the famed
San Andreas Fault
but with not so catastrophic
a potential
if you get what I mean

In the middle of
that rumbling
that shaky jiggling
rattling rumbling flapping
characteristic of roof shingles
and studs and joists
inside walls and underfoot
and overhead and around
and scary

In the middle of that
when I don’t know whether to
stand or sit or fall
right then
I want to ask people
if all the time they spent
buying stuff
to fall on their heads
at times like these
was worth it.

Thanks, Drew: underneath this, I was thinking of Fibber McGee’s closet, which just delighted me when I was a kid; I would wait in gleeful anticipation for that inevitable calamitous avalanche every week.
