letters of recommendation
piles of paper
dogearred pencil notes
letters to go

A little sacred stack
of possibilities
terra incognita
here there be monsters

A shelf of possibilities
published scripts
by known playwrights
with known track records

The director dreams
a sacred stack of monsters
a shelf of known positives
on the stage in the dream
energy, passion action
in the audience
tears applause laughter
agreement discovery amazement
the energy soars to a heart pumping climax
the actor thrusts a hand up towards the gods
the crowd cannot breathe as his gaze
slowly falls upon the shattered flesh
of his poor tortured daughter

do I choose this ugly but intelligent possibility
or this sweet known crowd pleaser

do I stage a play that defines us
but will lose money or do I
go with a proven dandy
that will keep everyone employed
or do I take a chance that I can
hype the unproven play
and make it work
